「好き」の言い方 #0 – Hobby(趣味: やめたほうがいい)

OK. Let’s start at the bottom of the coolness ladder. Saying something is your hobby is one way to say you like it. But it’s not a cool way. Trust me. I know you learned hobby in junior high school, and every native speaker understands it, but it’s not cool. So, just stop it.

A: So, what is your hobby?
B: Dweeb.

Here are some better ways…

1 – Love

If you really, really like something, whether it’s a pastime or cake, you can say you love it. I’m sure you already know this. But did you know it’s cool? Well, I think it is.

I love this song!

I loooooove cheesecake.

I love it when that happens!

2 – Live and Breathe It

If someone really, really likes doing something, and does it all the time, like 24/7, you can say they live and breathe it. We use it a lot to talk about athletes or other people who practice something all the time.

That guy lives and breathes guitar.

3 – Addicted

So, have you ever not been able to stop doing something? Like, for example, eating Pocky? Then you can say you’re addicted. The original meaning of addicted is kinda bad, because it’s when someone can’t stop using alcohol or drugs. But nowadays, you can use it to talk about cake, or things you like to do in your spare time, or even your boyfriend or girlfriend. So, this one is used a lot with things we just started doing or started liking kind of suddenly. You can also say that you can’t stop.

I’m totally addicted to this game. I can’t stop.

I’m getting addicted to YouTube.
